Macedonian costumes and costume pieces

from the Stefni Agin collection

discussion about these costumes, when collected, etc.

Stefni collected a lot of her Macedonian things during a trip to Yugoslavia in 1972. The Bitola area pieces were collected in a second-hand store in Bitola run by Iliya, to whom people from surrounding villages brought old items to be sold. He was a great enthusiast and many people have things in their collection purchased in his store. Below left is a picture of him in his store taken in 1979, below right is a picture of a tourist dressed in a potential purchase in the market in Ohrid, where Stefni purchased the Ohrid costume with the deeply appreciated assistance of Bob Liebman.

Bitolsko scarf Woman's scarf from the Bitola area. Black embroidery on hand-woven cotton. This scarf could fill out either Bitola costume.

apron of unclear origin This apron was found stored as part of Stefni's Bitola area costumes and costume pieces. She believed it belonged there. It is woven of four-harness twill black wool, and consists of two widths of fabric, sewn with a horizontal seam. The hem has coarse hand embroidery and a strip of fabric at the bottom edge. If anyone can help identify this, please contact us.

    single sleeve cuff

This is a single sleeve cuff (there is only one of the pair), used for festive dress in the Bitola area. It is worn over the bottom part of the sleeve. It has three coins sewn onto it, plus some red beads, edged with black woolen braid.

macedonian sleeve embroidery Sleeve embroidery cut off from a woman's chemise. This is one of a matching pair. There is a small band of commercial red fabric lining the inner bottom edge of the sleeves. I found a similar Kichevo region sleeve in an old Macedonian embroidery book, take a look at the lower right-hand example!
